An appreciation post for Laurie Keller

“What, what!” Recently I discovered that all the seasons for Cougar Town are on Disney+, so what other choice did I have then to finally watch all the episodes? And besides the funny banter, endless glasses of wine and musical intermezzos, one person in particular stood out for me: Laurie Keller.

Laurie is portrayed as a bit of a dumb blonde, but there’s more than meets the eye. To be fair, she has made some poor life decisions, but those gave her tons of wild stories and therefore life experience (even after a background check by Ellie they all checked out). She knows what she wants out of life, but also what she definitely doesn’t want.

What I admire most about her, is the fact that she does everything in life wholeheartedly and unapologetically. “What you see is what you get” really rings true for her. She lives life out loud in every possible way: her opinions, her make-up, her outfits, even her laugh. On top of that: if she’s on your side, she’ll fight for you, no matter what.

In the show her frenemy Ellie can give her a hard time, about things she says, does or wears. Instead of getting self-conscious, Laurie bites back. I think a lot of women (definitely me) can learn a lesson or two from her. Just do things with your whole heart, own up to who you are and life out loud.

I mean, we can repeat that mantra in our head. “Shouldn’t have said that”. “Shouldn’t have worn that”. “Shouldn’t have done that”. Or we can own up to the fact that we did and either enjoy it or learn from it and just move on. Laurie is my fictional lesson in apologizing less and being more comfortable with who I am. Even if I’m a little weird. What. What.
